- Building Maintenance ManagementPublication . Falorca, Jorge Gabriel Furtado; [Tese autoproposta]Buildings are some of the most valuable assets of any nation, in the sense that they provide people shelter, places to work and leisure, and so many others functions. With the rising costs of new buildings, the need for Building Maintenance (BM), has become even more relevant, since it allows the qualification of the built portfolio, helps boosting the economy, upgrades life well-being of users, as well as the appreciation of spaces in generally. BM, when seen in a structured way, is currently making significant progresses; although, regarding buildings, there seems to be a need for further development. However, the widespread perception is that Maintenance Actions (MA) are still, in their generality, reactive, consisting of corrective actions, major reforms and unscheduled interventions, carried out mainly on the basis of the available budgets, with the main objective of restoring the operational status of elements and the normal utilisation conditions. While in the equipment sector, still are the experience, the evaluations and the recommendations of the manufacturers the most decisive aspects for the type and frequency of maintenance operations, at the level of constructive elements of buildings, this practice is, nevertheless, already making positive developments, although it is still bluntly far from what would be desirable. Therefore, regarding the buildings’ subject, there are aspects needing improvements towards more sustainable ways of acting and thinking. The main objective of this thesis is the presentation of the general lines of a broad and integrated model, developed for BMM, that is, a base algorithm for an Information System for Automatisation of Procedures in the BMM, referred to in an abbreviated form as SIAPME (initials in Portuguese). By establishing himself as an additional contribution to deepen knowledge on the subject of BMM, this model thus proposes a set of methodological actions - which, when used by an organisation of this sector of activity (regardless of its size), will, in theory, allow the management process to develop in a more sustainable manner. This, both from an operational and the information integration point of view and in line with the current technological and scientific challenges. For the above purpose, this thesis gathers a selection of scientific articles, arranged through a sequence that was deemed to be the most coherent. In this perspective, its presentation is established in line with the development of study and research work carried out in recent years. The methodology followed involved a broad literature review as well as the selection and treatment of information considered most important for the purposes. Literature was gathered relying mostly on repositories, institutional sites, Internet search engines, etc. MS Excel capabilities were also used, both for treatment of numerical data (when necessary) as for systematising knowledge and ideas, particularly in order to design the SIAPME algorithm - which was based on the elaboration and presentation of a vast set of organisation charts and flow charts, inserted in several sheets, with hyperlinks to each other. Visual Basic was also used to develop the experimental adaptation of the Resources Management function foreseen in SIAPME model. The overall results achieved from this model seem to be quite positive, especially when compared to similar cases. For development of SIAPME, a concise and in-depth state of the art has been carried out, available in an organised manner; also, an innovative design algorithm for GME has been succeeded, planned to be quite broad and with a larger capacity of information storage that many of current models seem to lack. It is believed that after an eventual SIAPME evolving process to an informatics tool, it may present transversal characteristics to the previously considered ratings of CAFM and CMMS systems, basically covering every single aspects of its application categories, those being building management, space management, etc. Overall, it is believed that the results of this study could make significant contribution towards a paradigm shift regarding the way BMM is still seen and practised.
- Floaters as coach’s joker? Effects of the floaters positioning in 3vs3 small-sided games in futsalPublication . Pizarro, David; Práxedes, Alba; Travassos, Bruno; Gonçalves, Bruno; Moreno, AlbertoThe aim of this study was to analyse the effects of floater positioning within futsal Gk+3vs3+Gk SSGs on youth players’ tactical and physical performance. An independent measure approach under four experimental conditions was carried out: Floaters Off (FO), Goal Line Floaters (GLF), Lateral Floaters own court sidelines (LFocsl) and Lateral Floaters full court sidelines (LFfcsl). Thirty male futsal players (U19 age category) participated in the study. Players’ activity was assessed using WIMU PROTM and heart rate (HR) was recorded by HR monitors during the SSGs. Results showed significant differences in the physical variables (ρ ≤ 0.05), not finding such differences in the tactical variables analysed. However, significant differences were observed in relation to the spatial occupation areas. GLF is related to higher distance and speed variables, being the most demanding SSG; in LFocsl, lower HR values were obtained, and FO is linked to the acceleration and deceleration variables, being an indicator of futsal performance. These findings should be considered for the design of futsal training tasks, according to the context (team, players . . .) and time of the week and the season, since they allow the development of the variables described by optimising training time with the ball.
- Simulations of a Plunging Airfoil Undergoing Unequal Ascending and Descending Velocities at Low Reynolds NumbersPublication . Torres, George L. S.; Camacho, Emanuel; Marques, Flávio D.; Silva, AndréDynamic stall is an effect frequently seen in nature and rotary wings where flow separation induces strong force oscillations. In order to simulate such phenomena, reduced-order models (ROMs) such as the LESP-modulated discrete-vortex method (LDVM) are often used whose applicability at low Reynolds number is discussed here. CFD computations with the SST were conducted to obtain the critical leading-edge suction parameter (LESP) by analyzing the skin friction coefficient distribution for the Reynolds number tested of 1,500. Results explore both symmetrical and asymmetrical plunging of a NACA0012 airfoil following a triangular velocity profile, indicating a good agreement between experimental, CFD, and LDVM computations, which makes the latter, a very efficient and adequate method to study wake configurations of oscillating airfoils at low Reynolds numbers.
- Social marketing in contexts of uncertainty: An analysis of social capital and health social support in online health communities facing treatment uncertaintyPublication . Baptista, Nuno Tiago Cláudio Leitão; Alves, Helena Maria Baptista; Pinho, José Carlos Martins Rodrigues deFor several medical treatments there is considerable scientific and medical uncertainty about the relative benefits and risks they imply. The literature indicates social support as an important factor in health uncertainty management. The concept of social support has gained considerable interest in the areas of behavioral medicine and health psychology research. Despite such interest, it is still not clear how it can be approached in social marketing interventions since there is a lack of conceptual and empirical literature discussing the concept from a social marketing perspective. The present thesis aims to explore how the social support concept can be better approached in social marketing interventions targeting contexts of treatment uncertainty. To attain this objective, first a scoping review of social marketing interventions in the health area operationalizing the concept of social support was undertaken. Results indicated that interventions have operationalized the concept in connection with all the key aspects of social marketing, including behavioral change, consumer research, segmentation and targeting, and exchange, as well as marketing mix and competition. However, the findings also indicated poor conceptualizations of social support and the underreporting of the theoretical rationale for the operationalization of the concept. Second, the study adopted a mixed-methods approach that involved netnography and social network analysis, to examine the nature of online social support, understood as a resource generated through social capital, using two distinct case studies: i) an online forum focused on health discussion about electronic cigarettes; ii) an online forum dedicated to menopausal hormone replacement therapy. Findings indicate that online health communities can be a place for extending the support networks of people facing treatment uncertainty as multiple typologies of peer-to-peer social support are remotely exchanged in the virtual communities. Both online health communities were found to have similar network structures characterized by small-world and scale free properties and reduced levels of reciprocity. Results also indicate that users mostly search for informational types of support in the online health communities and that they can be segmented based on the structural positions they occupy in the networks and patterns of support interaction. However, it was found that the information available in these forums can be subject to imprudent processes of selection by forum participants who try to conform online discussion to suit the forums’ shared and accepted narratives that highlight the benefits of these uncertain treatments, while minimizing the respective risks. From a theoretical perspective, this study has relevant implications for health uncertainty management literature by putting in evidence collective processes of information selection in the online health communities, that can hinder the main objective of these virtual spaces, that is to function as platforms for knowledge acquisition. Second it deepens understanding about the interconnected relations between the concepts of social capital and social support. The study also brings innovation in methods by combining social network analysis and netnography, two naturalistic and online-suited research methods to study online health communities. For practionaires, the results of the study provide significant insights that can be used to program social marketing interventions intended to increase and enhance the quality of social support available in these types of online health communities.
- HEI Efficiency and Quality of Life: Seeding the Pro-Sustainability EfficiencyPublication . Pedro, Eugénia De Matos; Leitão, João; Alves, HelenaThis study assesses the efficiency of higher education institutions (HEIs), considering the social, environmental and cultural factors (pro-sustainability), and at the same time examines how this efficiency can influence regional quality of life (QoL). The study adopts a two-step methodology. In the first step, the standard Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to estimate the efficiency scores of 23 Portuguese public HEIs; and in the second step, a multivariate logit regression is performed to assess the role played by the HEIs’ pro-sustainability efficiency in regional QoL. The main findings reveal that the HEIs located in the Greater Lisbon area have a higher pro-sustainability efficiency, but that efficiency is more significant regarding social factors. Concerning the contribution of pro-sustainability efficiency to the region’s QoL, this is significant for all the components, with the environmental and cultural aspects contributing positively to this significance.
- Social entrepreneurship and social innovation: looking inside the box and moving out of itPublication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Fernandes, CristinaThe impact of the global recession has served to increase the pressure on the management of nonprofit organizations (NPO). Executive leadership is an essential component of the success of these institutions. The aim of this paper is to survey the existing literature on social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the third sector (TS). For this, we used the collection of existing literature on the Web of Science (WoS). The 176 articles selected in this database were analyzed analytically and also using the VOSviewer software. The results show the existence of three approaches that highlight a relationship between entrepreneurial behavior and NPO performance, the creation of social value and the entrepreneurial orientation of NPO that triggered the emergence of hybrid organizations: social enterprises. This study aims to contribute to the construction of a holistic model for the sector.
