  • New communication approaches in thermal spa social media: A sentiment analysis of comments
Publication . Antunes, Vera; Gonçalves, Gisela; Estevão, Cristina
This article reflects on the use of social media to communicate thermalism with a view to arouse curiosity about thermalism. Through strategic communication it emphasises both the medium (social media) and the objective (engagement with users). With the aim of researching and developing communication strategies in social media that can be used by thermal spas to increase the engagement of their followers, this study analyses the comments on social media and the opportunities that may arise when looking into the future of communication. The results come from the analysis of the social media of Termas de Chaves and Termas de São Pedro do Sul in Portugal, revealing that people are increasingly motivated to experience thermal services and products. Artificial intelligence was used to identify the sentiments in the comments, which provided relevant results to develop a model capable of maximising the benefits of thermalism and minimising communication problems with its audiences. This model supports a plurality of digital communication strategies, with different characteristics and objectives, but which fulfil a collective purpose: to disseminate information about thermalism in order to build a solid knowledge about it. This study highlights the need for further research on thermalism, with a special focus on communication.
  • Sustainable Waste Management in the Production of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants - A Systematic Review
Publication . Marcelino, Sara; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Paço, Arminda do
Without a Sustainable Waste Management (SWM) system, the growing demand for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) can also lead to a considerable increase in the waste generated by the industry. Since MAP residues have a notable potential to be valorised, the implementation of Circular Economy (CE) solutions can play a central role in converting waste into economic opportunities, while fostering a sustainable planet. CE helps to mitigate environmental and social risks caused by the accumulation of biomass by turning waste into valuable products. A systematic review was conducted, aiming to identify potential applications for the valorisation of MAP residues under a sustainable approach. A total number of 47 studies were analysed, providing a novel compilation of possibilities for decision makers in the MAP industry to develop new products for crop management or new businesses in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, chemical, paper, or building industries. Researchers in this field have focused more on the industrial value of MAP residues than on the empirical assessment of environmental and economic benefits. Further investigation should be undertaken to present empirical applications and to develop a decision support system to assess the sustainable performance of valorisation options.
  • Sustainable Agricultural Practices for the Production of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Evidence and Recommendations
Publication . Marcelino, Sara; Hamdane, Samia; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis; Paço, Arminda do
As the demand for medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) increases, so does the pressure to intensify production, increasing the risk of overexploitation of these natural resources. Therefore, both consumers and companies must commit to sustainable practices. Since sustainable practices in MAP production are scattered in the literature, this study aims to provide a comprehensive compilation of agricultural practices to improve sustainable performance in productive activities. This study collects recommended practices for cultivation, harvesting, drying, extraction of essential oils, and packaging, based on guidelines published by the World Health Organization, the European Herb Growers Association, and the European Medicines Agency, and presents complementary information from scientific papers and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Since the circular economy is considered one of the solutions to foster sustainability, the potential for valorising residues from MAP processing is also highlighted. This study allowed us to identify a set of key parameters that should be monitored in MAP production, which may be a starting point for designing a sustainability assessment tool for the sector. By presenting examples of circular economy approaches, this research can help producers to identify new business opportunities.
  • Tourism Related to Aromatic and Medicinal Plants: Some Practical Evidence
Publication . Capucho, Joao; Paço, Arminda do; Gaspar, Pedro Dinis
This study examines the dynamic interaction between tourism and the Aromatic and Medicinal Plant (AMP) industry in Portugal. An innovative questionnaire was methodically designed, covering a wide range of topics such as pharmacy, tourism, economics, the environment, and circularity. A dataset of 25 separate farmers’ responses was produced by focusing specifically on responses within the tourist sphere. Particularly, six of these participants engaged in tourist activities in addition to regular AMP efforts. The questionnaire, which is organized around three open-ended questions, yields critical information. It identifies the major motivations driving farmers toward more sustainable strategies in their tourism-focused AMP operations. Furthermore, it identifies the major barriers to tourist growth in the AMP business. Finally, it outlines the benefits of more closely connecting the tourism sector and AMP enterprises. This study closes with an in-depth discussion of its most significant implications and conclusions, providing useful insight for industry stakeholders and academics alike.
  • The role of market orientation in the performance of NPOs
Publication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Fernandes, Cristina; Veiga, Pedro
With the downturn in the global socioeconomic panorama, the market orientation (MO) and the performance of non-profit organisations (NPOs) have come in for growing levels of attention. However, authors remain unanimous in emphasising the scope there remains for further research designed to better understand the role of MO on the performances achieved by NPOs. The objective of this research is thus to analyse the influence of MO on the performance standards of NPOs. To this end, we deployed a quantitative methodology based on the application of a survey of NPOs that received a total of 135 valid responses. The results demonstrate a statistically significant positive effect on the dimensions of orientation towards users, towards the competition, the incentive system even while the effect of interfunctional coordination lacks in significance. Despite the data collection having taken place at a particular moment in time, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly hindered this process and correspondingly preventing this study from attaining still greater representativeness, our results serve to strengthen the theory and practice on market orientation in NPOs. The research results also generate important implications across two levels: at the NPO level and for their decision-makers; it also deepens knowledge on this theme and helps to complete a gap found in the existing literature. In terms of practice, this contributes to NPO managers and policy makers to grasp how MO is not a phenomenon exclusive to the private sector but also extends across the non-profit sector.
  • The impact of innovation management on the performance of NPOs: Applying the Tidd and Bessant model (2009)
Publication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Fernandes, Cristina; Veiga, Pedro
The literature is consistent in stating that innovation helps in improving the performance of nonprofit organizations (NPOs), highlighting how there remains the scope for further research designed to better understand the dimension supporting social innovation. Through the application of the Tidd and Bessant model, which reflects an important contribution to this specific sector, this study seeks to meet a shortcoming in analyzing just which innovation management factors influence the performance of NPOs. To this end, we applied a quantitative methodology based on a survey made of Portuguese NPOs that received a total of 135 valid responses. Based upon the application of multiple linear regression models, this study concludes that there are five innovation management models with a positive impact on NPO performance levels. In terms of the implications, these results, consistent with earlier research of a different nature, strengthen the idea that private business sector methods may undergo successful adaptation to the social sector and assist such entities to implement measures that offset their organizational, and consequent financial, weaknesses.
  • Social entrepreneurship and social innovation: looking inside the box and moving out of it
Publication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Fernandes, Cristina
The impact of the global recession has served to increase the pressure on the management of nonprofit organizations (NPO). Executive leadership is an essential component of the success of these institutions. The aim of this paper is to survey the existing literature on social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the third sector (TS). For this, we used the collection of existing literature on the Web of Science (WoS). The 176 articles selected in this database were analyzed analytically and also using the VOSviewer software. The results show the existence of three approaches that highlight a relationship between entrepreneurial behavior and NPO performance, the creation of social value and the entrepreneurial orientation of NPO that triggered the emergence of hybrid organizations: social enterprises. This study aims to contribute to the construction of a holistic model for the sector.
  • Social entrepreneurship orientation and performance in non-profit organizations
Publication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Fernandes, Cristina I.; Veiga, Pedro; Kraus, Sascha
With the downturn in the global socioeconomic panorama, the social entrepreneurship orientation (SEO) and the social performance of non-proft organizations (NPOs) have become subject to growing levels of attention. The objective of this study is to analyze the infuence of SEO on the performance of NPOs. To this end, we deployed a quantitative methodology based on the application of a survey of NPOs, which received a total of 135 valid responses. Our results demonstrate a positive efect for the dimensions of social innovation and social proactivity even while reporting no efect for the acceptance of social risks on performance. These results hold important implications across two diferent levels: in terms of the NPOs and policy-makers.
  • Rural and agri-entrepreneurial networks: A qualitative case study
Publication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Franco, Mário
The Queijo Serra da Estrela, DOP is the oldest Portuguese cheese recognized internationally. The objective of this paper is to analyse a rural, agri-entrepreneurial network created by a young, female, craft cheese producer located in an area of low population density in the inland central region of Portugal. For data collection, several qualitative semi-structured phone and face-to-face interviews were held with the partners of the network. This paper contributes by helping to understand how a rural agricultural network in the specific sector of a Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) product works and what its motives, success factors and benefits are. The results indicate that trust, confidence and regular payments are essential to make this network viable and create added value for business in a traditional sector threatened by climate changes, the age of shepherds and importation of exotic breeds of sheep. Some theoretical and practice contributions will be also presented.
  • Leadership and organizational innovation in the third sector: A systematic literature review
Publication . Adro, Francisco José Nave do; Leitão, João
The impact of the global recession has served to increase pressure on non-profit organizations resources. Executive leadership is an essential component of the success of these institutions. The two-fold purpose of this article is to provide a state-of-the-art overview about the existing literature on leadership and organizational innovation in the third sector, as well as to identify research gaps leading to a research model, which can be used in further empirical research. For this, we used the collection of existing literature in the Web of Science. The 144 articles selected in the database were analysed using the VOSviewer software. Results show a concern with the renewal of management bodies and a lack of qualified leaders. This study contributes to the construction of an action agenda leading to the establishment of new leadership and organizational innovation model for the third sector.
