  • Parallel Cities: Film as architectural tool

    Parallel Cities is the title of a research project in which film is a central instrument to identify and analyse architectural problems. Film and video are traditionally considered tools for representation and are usually used in the realm of architecture in ways similar to presentation models, perspective renderings and architectural photography. There are however other tools that might be even more important within the architectural process, those which drive reflection about space and architectural problem solving: sketches, conceptual models, photography documenting process. All of these tools are crucial to the architects’ design process. One of the fundamental purposes of this research project is to promote the use of film and video as design tools. Other research fields, such as anthropology, use film and video as a research instrument. In anthropology, ethnographic film is a research tool which had a far reaching impact in contemporary documentary cinema. In architecture, film was used as a research instrument in William Whyte’s “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” (1980), which has served as the main source for the development of our project. We propose to observe the social interaction that occurs in recently modified public spaces – such as Largo do Intendente in Lisbon – bringing forth new patterns of occupation, as well other architectural problems that are still open. Thus, video becomes an instrument that allows the architectural project to be continually questioned and redesigned, and it extends the span of the architectural project into its built and occupied existence.
  • The W@ARCH.PT as an Ongoing Feminist Research Project in Architecture: Contextualizing Initial Reflections

    In Portugal, the participation of female architects in the development of the profession – in the broad sense of the word: project, research, education, criticism, and policy – is far from having been identified, problematized, and disseminated. The research project W@ARCH.PT (Women Architects in Portugal: Building Visibility, 1942-1986) strives to give visibility to female architects – revealing “who?”, “when?”, and “how?” – and contribute to expanding the history of Portuguese architecture, as well as developing feminist studies and ideas within the discipline. The strategies chosen to carry out this ongoing research intersect with feminist theories and epistemologies, outside and inside architecture. The issues raised require a critical understanding of the processes that sustain the silencing of female architects’ voices, imposing limitations on how we understand the profession in its many facets. The feminist historical reflection that we propose is based on the idea that combining the production of knowledge and professional practices is crucial to change gender biases and women’s oppression in both fields.
  • Remapping Modernisms: Contemporary Debates

    An International Docomomo conference in Latin America presents an opportunity to reflect on the very definition of modernity and modern architecture from diverse points of view. In the last decades of the previous century and the first decades of this one, international knowledge about 20th-century architecture has been significantly expanded, following in-site and archival research held by scholars worldwide. This recognition makes it increasingly clear how canonical history books, written decades ago by prestigious authors and being used worldwide as references to the situate Modern Architecture are outdated. Albeit very important and still very useful, these narratives are incomplete, of insufficient temporal and geographical range, and blind to the debate of gender and race issues, that are indispensable from a contemporary point of view. Yet – perhaps for lack of other options –we still rely upon them to define our current conceptual definition of “Modern Architecture”. It is an uncomfortable situation that must be questioned. It is necessary to expand our awareness, to remap, reframe, and perhaps re-date what should be defined and comprised as “Modern Architecture”. Revising the established propositions, reframing the habitual debates, and rethinking our teaching and research studies’ scope and focus is unavoidable.
  • Plural Existences: Feminists’ Epistemologies and the History of Architecture

    When we study 20th-century History of Portuguese Architecture we notice the absence of women architects, a reality replicated in the global history of the discipline. This work dialogues with some genealogical lines that can be useful in sketching a different way of making History, namely the History of Women Architects. We propose a situated methodology that expands sources, voices and narratives, drawing on contributions from feminist historiography in general, including their materialization in Art and Geography. The goal of this proposal is to contextually frame a feminist methodology for the History of Architecture in Portugal that considers plural existences and welcomes multiple ways of embodying and making architecture.

  • Para que materializas tu a perda?

    Comentando o romance El Pianista, de Manuel Vásquez Montalban, que atravessa diversos dos momentos dramáticos da Espanha do século XX, José Colmeiro refere, sobre a relevância da transmissão oral, a “importancia de la memoria como forma de supervivencia cultural” (1985, p. 254, nota 261), à qual eu acrescentaria também a da sobrevivência social e afectiva. Se a garantia de que a preservação das memórias é um modo recorrente de resistência con- tra forças e momentos violentos de perda, como nestes duros episódios do contexto espanhol, também se pode pensar que é fundamental construir algo – material ou não – a partir delas. O próprio texto de Vásquez Montalban é, entre outras coisas, disso um exemplo. O motivo do movimento, mas também o próprio movimento que vai da salvaguarda à construção, são simultaneamente simples e complexos: garantir que se possa sobreviver, primeiro, para que se consiga viver, depois.
  • Architect Luz Valente-Pereira: Architecture, Research, and Life in a Changing Country

    Luz Valente-Pereira (b. 1934, Lisbon) is a key figure of the 20th century Portuguese History of Architecture, albeit a forgotten one. This research is a starting point for establishing a more solid biography of this pioneer who initiated the first decades of female participation in the architectural field in Portugal. After some professional experience in different contexts, she developed a stable research career at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) with studies on various spatial scales. We have used different methodologies: bibliographical review, consultation of national archives, and an interview with her. Our proposal is not only to create female references but also to broaden the historical readings on women’s participation in Portugal throughout the 20th century.
  • Terra como Casa: Curso Breve sobre Ecofeminismos e Espaço

    “Terra como casa” apresentou-se como um curso breve em 3 módulos (Planeta/Cidade/Casa), uma introdução à temática dos Ecofeminismos e à produção de espaço. Articulando teoria e prática, pensamento e experimentação, o curso procurou ser interescalar, interseccional e decolonial. Através de conferências internacionais, workshops, sessões de discussão de projetos e práticas, abriu-se lugar para uma visão feminista da Arquitetura e da Cidade centrada no cuidado e na sustentabilidade da vida e do planeta. A urgência de repensar o modo como se constrói, reflete e usa o espaço, interpela os produtores de espaços – arquitetos e arquitetas, urbanistas e paisagistas –, mas também um número crescente de pessoas interessadas no cruzamento entre as questões espaciais e de género.

    A Revista Desafios apresenta o Dossiê Arquitetura, Urbanismo e Design na Amazônia e no Cerrado, cuja produção teve início com o edital de chamada pública em julho de 2021. Cabe destacar que a organização deste dossiê ocorreu em meio a um cenário turbulento e de grande instabilidade política e econômica, decorrente dos ataques sistemáticos do governo Jair Bolsonaro à educação, com repercussão direta na produção científica brasileira, tanto pela política de desmonte, por meio de cortes orçamentários, quanto pelo fomento de narrativas negacionistas e fake news relacionadas à pandemia da Covid-19, que causou a morte de mais de 690 mil pessoas no Brasil.
  • From Arquitectas to Matrices - and then to more

    The article here presented is a personal narrative and has the exclusive goal of recording memories for the future. Therefore, it describes the events presented below from a situated perspective: the author’s one. This privileged position, first as a participant, and now, as a nar- rator, could be problematized. Too often, this is an essential step in feminist research that we tend to —naively and reductively— forget. But already in 1929, Virginia Woolf wrote in A Room of One’s Own (2001, p. 2): “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” That is, she must have space and time to independently think and write. Taking this premise into account, this narrative starts.
